performing and preserving an ancient tradition

Gareth is a passionate ambassador for the unbroken aural traditions of the Welsh and Welsh Romany music. With a teacher - student lineage that goes back centuries, Gareth is one of a new generation of Welsh Triple Harpists to inherit the tradition and is dedicated to preserving and performing it, and passing it on to future generations.

Gareth is a Welsh Triple Harpist and composer based in the Marches UK, and regularly working throughout Wales. Since 2016 he has established himself as one of the new generation of Welsh Triple Harpists, and has been awarded the John W Thomas prize for Solo Folk Instrument at the National Eisteddfod Cardiff 2018, and was later Young Musician of the Year at Cwlwm Celtaidd Interceltic Festival 2019. In 2024 he was one of four recipients of the Alan Surtees Trust Grant for the production of a debut album, and came second place in ‘Under 25 Harp performance’ at the Gwyll Cerdd Dant.

He is committed to sharing the unbroken aural tradition of the Welsh and Welsh Romany music, performing across folk festivals, eisteddfod and events – both solo and as part of Triple Harp ensemble ‘Ty Teires’. Captivatingly passionate about the centuries of unbroken tutor – student lineage that has been passed to him by Robin Huw Bowen, he is proud to keep the tradition alive, and to share this living tradition with a new generation of listeners. He also honours the tradition with new interprations that celebrate his unique voice as a performer, alongside original compositions that build upon the tradition and celebrate the unique sound of the Welsh Triple Harp.

Past performances include the historic ‘Yn ôl i Lanofer – Back to Llanover’ concert, alongside Robin and 5 other Triple Harpists, the historic ‘Telynor Cymru’ concert at Gregynog Hall celebrating 200 years of John Roberts as part of the New Cambrian Minstrels and the Edward Jones ‘Bardd y Brenin’ concert commemorating the anniversary of his death in 2024. In 2022 he was featured on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, talking about the music of John Roberts.

In 2024 he composed and recorded a harp part for Anya Pailthorpe’s folk single ‘The Marks of a Body That’s Lived In’

Gareth is passionate about sharing the music and stories of the Welsh Triple Harp with others, using TikTok, Instagram and Youtube to bring the story of the Welsh Harp to the masses. He has previously had his harp videos go viral with well over 600,000 views and hundreds of thousands of interactions, and has even had his content featured on LADbible.
